At CERN, we believe the future of science lies in the hands of young people, but we also know they can reach their full potential only if their educators are well-prepared and qualified to inspire and guide their classes. We value teachers' work and appreciate their efforts to motivate and equip the next generations with the necessary tools to excel. As we see it, a good training for teachers is the best investment to instil science and technology awareness in the young generation, and prepare them to understand and find their place in tomorrow’s world.
Since 2014, we organise annually three 1-week-long residential courses, between September and November, with the following goals:
- Update teachers’ knowledge with the latest developments in physics and in particular, particle physics;
- Give new ideas and tools to bring modern physics into the classroom and engage high school students;
- Promote the exchange of knowledge and experience among teachers and researchers.
The Italian Teachers Programme is open to high school science teachers from Italian institutes, in Italy or abroad and is officially recognised by the Italian Ministry of Education. The courses are delivered in Italian, including lectures by CERN scientists, on-site visits and hands-on workshops. Participants are also involved in easy-to-reproduce physics experiments that can be later adapted and developed in classrooms. So far, more than 300 Italian teachers have profited from this programme. In 2015 alone, we welcomed 130 teachers (48% from Northern Italy, 27% from Central Italy and 25% from the Southern part and islands).
CERN's core contribution includes all scientific, administrative and technical support for the programme, as well as all necessary infrastructure. Travel and subsistence funds, covering accommodation and meals, are not covered by CERN, and often represent a barrier for teachers to attend this training. With your support we can overcome this barrier.
